What parents can do at home

Make Five Promises with children through daily conversations and with fun.
Five Promises
- Do not follow strangers.
- Call out for help if somebody tries to kidnap you.
- Do not play alone.
- Tell a family member where and with whom you are going to play before going out.
- Call out for help if somebody attempts to kidnap your friend.
- Always keep track of what your children are doing (including who the children play with, where they play, and which route they take to school), and check dangerous and safe places together.
-
- Places which may induce crimes (such as deserted houses/stores)
- "Accessible and hidden places" such as parking spaces and building rooftops
- Walk in the community with children and check dangerous and safe places where children can visit in case of crimes or accidents (Emergency Shelters for Children, gas stations, convenience stores and other shops where adults are stationed)
It is important to see and feel which places are dangerous and why such places are dangerous, and to identify emergency shelters.
It is also effective for children to prepare safety maps with parents or friends and remember such places.
- At home, please discuss crimes, accidents and suspicious individuals.
-
At home, please discuss crimes and accidents in the local community as well as information about suspicious individuals obtained from the police and local governments, and raise children’s awareness about crime prevention.
Aichi Prefectural Police Department offers information about suspicious individuals, etc. on its email-magazine (called PatNet Aichi).
What adults in the local community can do
- Instill Five Promises in daily life.
Pay attention to children in your local community.
Pay attention to children in your local community on a daily basis, and communicate with them (exchange greetings or talk to them).
Becoming familiar with each other is the first step to ensure safety and security.
- Pay attention to the safety of your local community.
-
Check suspicious individuals or cars if any.
If you see suspicious individual(s) with a child (or children), talk to them and check them out.
In case of an emergency, dial 110 immediately.
- A suspicious individual or car refers to an individual or car which is considered inappropriate at that time and place.
Specifically, a suspicious individual refers to a person who watches children playing in a park from inside a car, or observes children from behind objects in the daytime, etc.
- Check the features including the face and clothes of the suspicious individual, as well as the type, model, color and license number of the vehicle. Also remember the direction in which the suspicious individual went (the vehicle drove away).
- Keep the streets clean.
-
When streets are untidy with graffiti and abandoned bicycles, etc., criminals tend to think they can do whatever they want. By cleaning up the environment, the streets become less accessible to criminals.
