Easy but professional-looking! Pottery-making workshops for individuals and groups.

Hours, fees

Hours

9:30 am - 2:30 pm (the Museum is open until 4:30 pm)
Note: Because the workshops take about two hours, guests are accepted until 2:30 pm.

Fees for standard workshops(updated November 2024):

Pottery-making workshop (2 hours, when 1 kg of clay is used)
Adults:Minimum 1,000 yen
Junior high school and under:Minimum 850 yen
Ceramic painting (2 hours, when a teacup is used)
Adults:Minimum 1,000 yen
Junior high school and under:Minimum 850 yen

Note 1: Group fee applies for groups of more than 20 members.
Note 2: Attendant not participating in the workshop: 300 yen/2 hours

Payment

At the Museum, cash and cashless payments are accepted (to be made on the day of your visit).

Receiving the finished work

Please visit the Museum (no ticket necessary) approximately one month after the workshop (but within two months) and present the claim ticket to receive your work.
If you wish your work to be sent to you, please ask the shop.
(Please note that your work will be discarded when the receiving period ends.)

Types of Workshops

■Two types of workshops are offered: pottery-making and ceramic painting.

Pottery-making

Pottery-making

This workshop is for both first-timers and people with pottery-making experience. Guided by an instructor, participants can make ceramics freely.
(A hand-operated potter’s wheel will be used. An electric potter’s wheel is for those with experience only.)

Ceramic painting

Ceramic painting

On unglazed bisque-fired pottery, participants can paint their own design.
(Blue and brown paints are provided.)

■Choose from nine original glazes of the Museum

For glazing, participants can choose from the Museum’s original nine types of glaze. (Glazing will be done by an instructor.)

How to Make Reservations

Individuals

Reservations can be made online. Please visit this site.

Reservations will not be accepted by phone.

Groups

For groups of more than 20 members, please make reservations via email or fax.
Note: Reservations by telephone are not accepted.

Note 2: Please make the reservation at least one month before the visit.


◆If the number of reservations exceeds the limit of the Craftmaking Room, reservations will be suspended without notice.
◆If another group has already booked the workshop, or if Museum events are scheduled, reservations may not be accepted.

How the Workshops Work

Reception

At the reception desk of the Ceramic Craft Studio, an orientation to the workshops will be given. Choose which workshop (pottery-making or ceramic painting) you wish to join.

Purchase the materials

Purchase the necessary materials at the shop. (For pottery-making, buy the clay. For ceramic painting, buy a dish or a teacup.)

Working time

Enjoy your time in the workshop!

Notes:

・All necessary tools are provided. Please purchase the materials at the shop.
・Your work must be 5 - 30 cm (W) x 5 - 30 cm (D) and lower than 30 cm high, with the thickness 0.5 cm - 1.0 cm.
・First-timers will be given a lesson from an instructor, and an explanation on things to be cautioned.
・The first round of instruction starts at 9:30 am and is repeated at 30-minute intervals. The final round starts at 2:30 pm.
・Persons with disabilities can participate in the workshops with assistance.

After the work is complete

・Bisque firing, glazing, and final firing will be done by the instructor.
(Please note that cracking and other unexpected incidents may occur. The Museum will not be liable for such incidents.)
・Please visit the Museum one month after the workshop (but within two months) and present the claim ticket provided at the workshop to receive your work. For those who wish your work to be sent to you, please ask the shop to make the arrangements.
