Aichi Prefecture is located in about the middle of the Japanese archipelago, with flat plains stretching from west to south, and mountains in the northeast rising to over 1,000 m in elevation.
Aichi is 5,165 km² in area with a population of about 7.4 million people, making it one of Japan's three big metropolitan areas alongside Tokyo and Osaka.
Aichi has a particularly vibrant manufacturing sector centered on the automotive industry and has become Japan's leading production center.
With the opening of the Central Japan International Airport and the hosting of the Aichi Expo in 2005, the first World's Fair of the 21st century, Aichi is expected to progress rapidly as a center of global exchange.
